They are part of the province of Bali

Yet located a short boat ride away from 'mainland' Bali

Side note:

quick geography lesson, as I've been asked some questions...

1. Bali is not a country

2. Bali is an island 

3. Bali is located in the country of Indonesia 

4. Indonesia is the worlds largest archipelago

5. Archipelago = an extensive group of islands

6. Therefore Bali is one of the 17,000+ islands that make up the archipelago of the country of Indonesia

My favorite part of this whole experience was doing it all on your own time by motorbike/scooter. That can seem a bit daunting if you have never ridden one before, but I picked it up so quick! You will get lost, especially on Nusa Penida (the largest) but that is really all part of it. These islands have all the beauty (and more?) of Bali but less crowds and infrastructure. Everything here was cheaper than Bali which is a huge plus as well.. and SO close to Bali! You will hear a lot of people say Nusa Penida must have been what Bali looked like back in the day before tourism took over. There is SO much to discover between these 3 islands, such beauty.
